speaking of art...

this is probably my favorite painting. "Peter and John Running to the Tomb," by Eugene Bernard, a reference to John 20:3. i actually found the picture of it on a few other blogs, and it seemed like very few people were aware of it's existence, so i wanted to share it. it lives at the Musee d'Orsay in france; i hope to go visit it again one day. it hangs right next to the best rendition of the cruxifion i have ever seen (and there are a lot of crucifixion paintings. a LOT) by Russian painter Nikolai Gay. there's a lot to be said for "Peter and John...", and i feel like i should say a lot for it, given the post about learning about and understanding art, but i'll just leave it at: i'm not resistant to doing that and there is a lot to be said for a piece that can communicate so much so powerfully so well. kind of like God ("Here's the World. Here's the Word. Go for it.")

this piece is particularly stirring in light of Korrine's death, and i think the reason for that is, actually, the light work in the painting. there's this bright, inescapable hope, so much it makes us squint and run towards it simultaneously. the way Peter and John are kind of hunched in their approach makes you think a) they're feeling that really funky morning chill and b) whatever they are headed towards is really very forceful. they have to labor to get to it, and yet, they're up at this crazy earlier hour not just walking but running towards it. it must be that good.

struggle and bliss, struggle and bliss. struggle in bliss.

Korrine you are loved and missed. we struggle and you're in bliss, and that seems right.

This is one of my favorite paintings in this museum. I love the urgency and excitement and amazement of this moment that was capture. How wild that day must have been. How incredible. You can feel the motion of this painting; it's almost like you have to run to keep up with them. I feel out of breath looking at it and wish I could jump in and join the scene.
