today's bible connection
one of my favorite passages in the new testament (i know, i know, i run the risk of saying that about everything i pull from the new testament. hopefully that says something about the new testament and not about me. ideally it says something about the new testament and about me):
Luke 12:33-34
"Sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes. Your treasure will be safe; no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be."
now, as much as i love these verses, i also love my nifty daily Bible (thanks, Becky Tirabassi). i will complain that it is difficult to transport (i won't take this bugger around with me to read it in between classes or anything, because it's like, five times the size of my itty-bitty ESV i am partial to), but that might actually be to it's benefit, because i have to be deliberate about sitting down with it and meeting it in my room. which i enjoy. it also removes it from my to-do list - the second a thing is easily transportable, it goes on my to-do list, and becomes, sadly, part of a routine or a scheduling-efficiency-obsession. thanks to the larger, awkward size of this nifty daily Bible, i don't carry the Word of God around with the aim of "getting it done." i regret to say that i have to be forced into this situation (because of my own sinful obsessive control issues), but i am happy to say that, by the grace of God, i have learned from it, and routinely been met by the living Word via the intransportable daily Bible.
all that to say: it is pretty cool having the Bible split up like this and getting to fall victim to the ensuing coincidences. yesterday (april 7) i read that bit in Luke, which i get super hyped up about just as a standalone passage. but then today i read in Deuteronomy (which i keep accidentally spelling "Deuteronymy" which i think is funny but correct anyways):
Deuteronomy 32:34
"The Lord says, 'Am I not storing up these things, sealing them away in my treasury?'"
and i spazz out because the language is so close to what i just read the day before in the gospels. it's so cool! i love, love, love repetition as a poetic/literary/artistic device. i think rhythm is beautiful and pattern is lovely (i.e. mathematics, music, etc etc etc think of all things gorgeous and planned). i can't help but wonder if this is purposeful by inspiration, or just the NLT's horrible translation working to my personal benefit, or what, but either way, it's cool.
