six weeks. six books. twenty dollars. the challenge it happened upon a fall night at the university cafeteria: me: "i'm going to read all the novels before next semester." dear friend chris munekawa : "no you're not." me: "yes i am." chris: "no you're not. (a bunch of stuff about how long those books are)." me: "i'll bet you twenty bucks i will." chris: "alright." ( handshake ). case closed

today i solved one of my life's most haunting mysteries. when we first moved into this house (1997), we found, in the closet that now holds all my clothes, the creepiest looking bug i've ever seen. i freaked out, we killed it, never again did we see any other of it's type. since that day, the fear and uncomfortability i face my own home due to this horrible insect (particularly while putting on shoes that have been in closets) has immensely restricted my happiness and security. how did i know it wasn't an alien being? i'd never seen one before, and i'd never seen one since. it could have had all sorts of venom and intergalactic poison in it's fangs (if it had fangs). all kinds of bad. that awful little bug, just lurking in the crevices of my own home, the most evil that could fit in two inches of insect. just horrible. i recently saw someone's picture of the same critter, and they had called it a "potato bug." i googled it. and sure enough, tha...

north american vs. south american solipsism

david foster wallace: depression led him to death. roberto bolano: death led him to depression. i'm only a quarter of the way through Roberto Bolano's 2666 , an epic hunk of latin literature recently translated into English. i picked it up because of it's magnitude (literal size - 898 pages - and also "figurative size," or reported mass of subject matter and storyline). in this sense it is comparable to Infinite Jest , which i obviously liked ( anyone reading this is probably really bored of the prominence of this thing in my blogs. i was thinking about that and realizing that i sort of subconsciously use this blog as a holding bin for my thoughts surrounding IJ and DFW. don't really know how that ended up happening, but i wanted to take a second and clarify that i'm aware of this, and to kind of apologize, because i'm sure you have much better things to be thinking about than books you haven't read. i suppose i'm still using this thing as a p...
